Decoctions are special and potent potions made from Alchemy that use a monster's inherit mutagens to give Geralt some of their powers, if only for a time. These decoctions are often hard to brew, and require you to kill the monster you wish to borrow powers from.

Once a Portion or Oil or Bomb or Decoction is crafted, there are No More Re-crafting it to be used again. Except for Alchemy Substances. To re-stock Portions, Bombs & Decoctions, you need to Meditate. For Oils, you need to re-apply them on the weapon from the Inventory Menu.

The diagrams for potions can be bought at alchemy stores or from herbalists. However some superior diagrams can only be found in random chests throughout the game. Decoctions are special potions that use monster Mutagens to give Geralt some of his slain enemies' powers (see: Mutagen Locations).

The Witcher 3 also introduces decoctions which are longer-lasting than regular potions and confer more powerful effects. However, decoctions also have high toxicity and may only be used once before they have to be replenished via meditation.

Like other potions, alcohol will be used to refill the decoctions when Geralt meditates, and they can be added to the quick-use menu for ease of access. For those interested in making some or all of these decoctions, this guide will outline what they do, their ingredients, and where to find the recipes for them.

In other words, if you drink a decoction, you must drink fewer potions before the 75% threshold is reached. If you drink only decoctions, you will NOT hit the 75% overdose threshold, you will NOT undergo HP loss, and Endure Pain will NOT trigger.

Black Blood (Basic Potion)

Consuming a Black Blood potion makes the Witcher's blood toxic to Vampires and Necrophages, who will take damage when they successfully hit. Where to find Black Blood: Find the recipe in the basem*nt of Drahim Castle or buy it from the Halfling Herbalist in Novigrad.

The Griffin Decoction is great for defensive combat. Taking damage from enemies will raise Geralt's resistance to different types of damage by 1% each time, up to a maximum of 25%.

Go with the potions instead, unless you've already gotten Superior Swallow crafted. Other than that, go with your gut, there is no wrong answer here and it's nothing you'll miss out on.
